WMHCA BOARD ELECTIONS

The Washington Mental Health Counselor Association is accepting nominations for the board for the 2026-2027 cycle. WMHCA is passionate about supporting clinicians through education, advocacy, and membership outreach. 

WMHCA is accepting nominations for treasurer, graduate student representative, president-elect and general board members.  Any member of WMHCA is able to apply for these positions if they have been a member for at least one year (this is waived for the Graduate Student Representative position).

Preferred Qualifications and Commitment of a WMHCA Board Member

  • Has been a member in good standing for at least 1 year. (Or has a recommendation from another board member). Graduate Student Representative is exempt from this requirement.
  • Have been actively engaged in WMHCA or other non-profit organizations.
  • Are dedicated to the field of clinical mental health counseling with expertise in areas such as ethics, state regulations, private practice, community mental health, integrated care, or education.
  • Are able to attend board meetings and serve on at least one committee.
  • Are committed to WMHCA’s mission of promoting human dignity, anti-racism, anti-ableism, education, and public policy advocacy.
  • Are collaborative, strategic thinkers who want to help shape the future of mental health in Washington
  • Are committed to attend board meetings and to serve on one WMHCA committee.
  • Are committed to attend required board trainings and onboarding meetings.

Terms start July 1, 2026


  • The treasurer serves a 2-year term.

  • The graduate student representative serves a 1-year term

  • General board members serve a 2-year term.

  • President-Elect serves a 3-year term. (1 year as president elect, 1 year as president, 1 year as past-president)

Roles and Responsibilities

President-Elect

Role: The role of the president-elect is to serve is to serve as a voting member of the WMHCA board and ensure an even and thoughtful leadership transition. Must have served on the WMHCA board for at least a year prior to running for president-elect.


Responsibilities Include:

  • In the absence of the President, assume the role of President with all of its authority and responsibility.  
  • Serve on the WMHCA Executive Committee.
  • Serve as liaison to WMHCA committees and task forces and/or other WMHCA entities as assigned, and to other organizations, institutions, and associations as appropriate.

  • Responsibilities as requested at all board meetings, or by the by the President. 
  • Assist in the identification and mentoring of members to serve in any upcoming vacancies or expiring positions.

  • Plan and implement activities to provide transition for incoming and outgoing board members.

  • Provide articles for the newsletter.

  • Chair the Nominations Task Force.
  • Serve as ex-officio member of all committees and task forces.

General Board Member

Role: The role of the board is to establish and oversee the implementation of the programs and policies of WMHCA.


Responsibilities Include:

  • To conduct, manage, and control the business of the association through the adoption of programs and policies.

  • Act on the reports of committees and task forces

  • Provide feedback on the job performance of the Executive Director.

  • Implement and/or attend annual leadership training activities at the state or regional level.

  • Exercise other responsibilities as necessary  in the best interest of the association.

  • Attend board meetings. 

  • Apply and participate in at least one committee.

  • Advocate and represent WMHCA publicly and professionally as an industry-leading professional organization for mental heath practitioners.

  • Recruit new board members.

Treasurer

Role: The role of Treasurer is to chair the Finance Task Force and report all financial matters to the Board.  The Treasurere is the board steward for the financial-well being of the organization and acts as the primary contact person on all financial matters. 


Responsibilities Include:

  • Submitting the Finance Task Force annual plan of action and budget for board approval. The plan of action is to be built on the goals in the WMHCA strategic plan for the upcoming year.
  • Submitting reports of income and expenditures to the board before each board meeting.
  • Recommending revisions in WMHCA fiscal policies to the board.
  • Overseeing the implementation of the Responsibilities of the Finance Task Force
  • Ensuring the monthly budget to actual performance, is up to date.
  • Supporting the Operations Director and/or Executive Director in the organization's money management and banking requirements.
  • Ensuring the audit is completed in a satisfactory way, following accepted accounting practices, for presentation at the year-end board meeting.
  • Providing education to board members on the financial status of the organization
  • Acting as the financial committee lead, coaching and developing committee members.
  • Working with the organizational leadership to understand trends and share forecasts to budget expectations.
  • Ensuring the filing of any legal forms or financial fillings, on deadline, with accuracy
  • Serving on the Executive Committee
  • Serving as Treasurer of the WMHCA Foundation
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees

Graduate Student Representative

Role: The role of graduate student representative is to oversee outreach to student members and graduate students and bring these voices back to the board. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve on the Membership Committee.
  • Provide a voice for WMCHA student members.
  • Participate in outreach and activities in the graduate student community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Please submit your application by March 9th, 2026 at 5:00 PM.  You will be notified by March 13, 2026 if your application was accepted. Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet the requirements will not be accepted.

The ballot for elections will open on March 23, 2026 and close on April 3, 2026.  Applicants will be notified of the election results by April 2026, and WMCHA membership will be notified in the April Newsletter.
